There’s a lot of conversation in the homesteading world about meat chicken breeds. Some people swear by slower-growing heritage birds while others prefer the efficiency and consistency of Cornish Cross chickens. After researching, planning, and raising our own birds, we chose Cornish Cross for one simple reason: they help us provide dependable, high-quality meat for our family and community.
For us, homesteading is about intentional food production. We want to know exactly where our food comes from, how it was raised, and what went into producing it. Raising our own meat chickens allows us to take control of that process in a way that grocery store shopping simply cannot.
Why More Families Care About Food Sources
When most people think about chicken from the grocery store, they rarely think about how disconnected the process has become. Meat often travels hundreds or even thousands of miles before it reaches a dinner plate. Most consumers never see the conditions the animals were raised in, what they were fed, or how the food was handled along the way.
That disconnect is one of the reasons more families are turning toward local farms, homesteads, and direct-to-consumer food sources. People want transparency. They want to know who raised their food and how it was produced.
We wanted to raise chickens differently.
Why We Chose Cornish Cross Chickens
Cornish Cross chickens are specifically bred for meat production. They grow efficiently, convert feed well, and produce tender, flavorful meat that families actually enjoy cooking and eating. While they do grow faster than some traditional breeds, that does not mean they cannot be raised responsibly or humanely. In fact, responsible management is one of the most important parts of raising Cornish Cross birds successfully.
For our homestead, Cornish Cross birds provide the balance we were looking for; efficient growth, quality meat, and the ability to raise chickens in manageable seasonal batches.
Raising Chickens on Fresh Grass Daily
At McKee Homestead, our birds are raised in small seasonal batches with daily hands-on care. They begin life in a warm, clean brooder with constant access to fresh water and quality feed.
As they grow and weather conditions allow, they transition into chicken tractors out on pasture. These mobile shelters allow the birds to live directly on fresh grass while staying protected from predators and harsh weather. One of the most important parts of our process is that the chicken tractors are moved to fresh ground every single day.
Moving the tractors daily helps provide:
- Fresh grass and forage access
- Cleaner living conditions
- Better manure distribution
- Reduced waste buildup
- More natural outdoor exposure
We believe healthy animals produce better food. That means paying attention every single day — monitoring feed intake, checking water systems, moving birds onto clean pasture, and ensuring the flock stays healthy and comfortable. Raising meat chickens is not a “set it and forget it” process. It requires time, consistency, and care.
The Importance of Transparency
One of the biggest reasons we appreciate raising our own chickens is transparency. There’s no guessing where the meat came from or how it was handled. We see the process every single day.
That transparency creates trust. It also creates a stronger connection to the food we eat.
There’s something deeply rewarding about filling your freezer with food you raised yourself or purchased directly from someone who did. You understand the work behind every meal. You gain appreciation for the responsibility involved in producing quality food. And you start looking at food less as a commodity and more as something valuable.
Supporting Local Food and Small Farms
We’ve also found that people genuinely care about learning where their food comes from now more than ever before. Families want fewer ingredients they can’t pronounce. They want less processing. They want local options. They want to support small farms and homesteads instead of relying entirely on large-scale food systems.
That shift is important.
We don’t believe everyone needs to raise their own meat chickens. Homesteading looks different for every family. But we do believe people benefit from being closer to the source of their food; whether that means raising animals themselves, growing a garden, or supporting local producers.
More Than Just Raising Chickens
For our family, Cornish Cross chickens have become an important part of that mission. They allow us to produce high-quality meat efficiently while still maintaining the hands-on, small-scale approach that matters to us.
At the end of the day, we’re not just raising chickens.
We’re raising food with intention.
